Jessica Toomey
Associate, Family Lawyer
Jessica is an Associate Family Lawyer at Eliza Legal who supports clients through complex and often sensitive matters with compassion and empathy. Jess holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce, along with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. She practises exclusively in family law and advises on a range of matters including separation and divorce, parenting arrangements, property settlements, spousal maintenance and family violence.
Jess is committed to providing clear, pragmatic advice while guiding clients towards practical and sustainable outcomes during challenging times. She takes an approachable and client-focused approach, working closely with her clients to ensure they feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout the process. Jess has a particular interest in supporting clients experiencing family violence and is committed to ensuring they feel safe, heard, and supported throughout the legal process.
Jess has experience in family law litigation in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia and maintains a strong focus on resolving matters efficiently and, where possible, through negotiated outcomes. She works with clients from a range of backgrounds and tailors her advice to each client’s individual circumstances, recognising that every family law matter is unique.
In addition to her practice, Jess volunteers at community legal centres and is a committee member of the Victorian Women Lawyers.
Areas of Expertise
- Separation and Divorce - Advising on separation and applying for divorce, including where there are financial or parenting matters still to resolve.
- Parenting Arrangements - Negotiating and formalising parenting arrangements, by agreement where possible and through the court where necessary.
- Property Settlements - Identifying and dividing the asset pool, and formalising the outcome by consent orders or a binding financial agreement.
- Spousal Maintenance - Applications for ongoing financial support after separation or divorce.
- Family Violence and Intervention Orders - Applications for and responses to intervention orders, with a particular focus on supporting clients experiencing family violence.
- Alternative Dispute Resolution - Working towards negotiated outcomes so clients resolve matters efficiently and, where possible, without litigation.
- Family Court Representation - Acting for clients in proceedings in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.
